Lady May Tallow has reimagined traditional tallow making with a groundbreaking wet render technique, setting a new standard in natural skincare. Working alongside the dedicated craftsman Josh, Lady May Tallow has developed a process that transforms ordinary tallow into a beautifully whipped creation.
The wet render method begins with Josh carefully selecting premium grass-fed suet, which is then submerged in purified water. This critical step, acts as a protective barrier during the rendering process. Unlike traditional dry rendering, the water method prevents overheating and preserves the tallow's complete nutrient profile while naturally eliminating any unwanted (beefy) scents.
Under Josh's watchful eye, the temperature is maintained at a precise 185°F throughout the rendering process. The water serves as a natural temperature regulator, ensuring even heat distribution and optimal fat extraction. Lady May Tallow's technique specifies a slow rendering time of approximately 6-8 hours, allowing the fat to gently separate while retaining its beneficial properties.
Once rendered, the tallow undergoes Lady May's signature cooling and whipping sequence. Josh first cools the tallow to 92°F – a temperature we discovered creates ideal crystal formation. The whipping process incorporates carefully measured amounts of essential oils or carrier oils, creating an emulsion that gives the final product its distinctive smooth texture.
What sets our method apart is our innovative three-stage whipping protocol. Each stage occurs at specific temperatures, progressively incorporating more air and creating the cloud-like consistency that has become our trademark. Josh's expertise in executing these precise steps ensures each batch meets Lady May Tallow's exacting standards.
